Rogans Seat Walk

Rogan's Seat is a moorland Marilyn Hill summit in Upper Swaledale. The walk starts from the camping car park in Keld. From the car park head back along the lane, then turn left on the PROW. Follow the path taking the left fork down the bridge over the River Swale. Be sure to visit East Gill Force before you continue.

Once you have spent some time at the falls, carry on the PROW, taking the right turn when you come to the main track. Continue on this track taking the left fork when you reach the old tractor. This takes you to Crackpot Hall. This is another place where it is worth spending some time exploring.

When you have finished looking around, continue on the track past the old farm.

Go through a gate and continue on a feint path on a sleep slope, be careful on this section.

The path drops down to a bridge and then climbs back up to the Swinners Gill Lead Mine, another interesting place to stop and have a rest.

Continue past the old mine buildings and waterfall and climb the stepped path up the side of the gill.

When you reach the track, turn left to head east. After about 0.5km, take the left turn heading north.

The track passes a shooting hut on the left, keep going along the moorland track.

The summit is a pile of stones approximately 0.5km past the shooting hut on the left. You can just make it out in the middle of the picture below.

The last small section you need to leave the path and make you way over heather, but the terrain is not too bad.

Although the pile of stones may be a little disappointing for such a summit, the interesting walk up more than makes up for it. Not only do you bag a Marilyn Hill, but you also bag three places on the Fabulous North website. Now surely that has got to be worth the effort!
