Watching And Waiting
Art In Sunderland, Tyne And Wear
An old room set out with a seaman’s glass, and other features made from metal and stone. Situated on Lookout Hill overlooking the mouth of the River Wear.

On a stroll along the River Wear, one encounters a mix of creative and not-so-creative installations that depict the past, present, and future. Watching and Waiting to me has an air of suspense and menace. It is on an ideal spot called Lookout Hill.

Watching and Waiting is set out as a room, and has a few objects and furniture that make you question what it is for.
I'm thinking of a Poldark or Heathcliff character, brooding in this room. Some prose is scattered about, and one piece in brail. There is one piece that ends “Sometimes I think that the sea watches me also, but that is only fancy. I am not mad, but I could learn to be” which adds to the mystery.

It was installed circa 1994/5 and has input from Sculpture Colin Wilbourn, blacksmith artist Craig Knowles and writer Chaz Brenchley.

The naval spyglass was a handy piece of kit and was also known as a telescope. It was also referred to as a glass and brass. This one is galvanised steel.

The stone work is reclaimed, buff-coloured sandstone from the local old North Jetty. I wonder what's in the bag.

My thanks to Fabulous Norther Lorraine London for sharing some super sunny photographs
