Amble East Cemetery Spire

Religious Place In Amble, Northumberland

Spire which once linked two chapels in Amble East Cemetery.

On a recent jaunt along the Northumberland coast I stumbled upon this strange looking monument in a cemetery near Amble. Considering how many times I have visited Amble, I have never noticed this spire and it certainly is an eye catching thing.

The spire at the entrance to the cemetery once linked two chapels, which were built on either side of it in the 1870s. The chapels, spire and a residential property were built on the site by E&DM Spence of Amble at a cost of £2,000 and the chapels were consecrated in 1878. The cemetery was 2.5 acres in size, but as the population of Amble grew, it was decided by the Amble Joint Burial Committee that a second cemetery of 11 acres should be built in the west of the town.

The population of Amble grew from 152 people in 1801, to 1275 just 60 years later in 1861. This was in part due to the coal mining industry and the numerous collieries being developed south of the River Coquet bringing employment to the area. The East Cemetery was no longer fit for purpose by the late 1800s and the first burial took place at the new West Cemetery in 1905.

The chapels in the East Cemetery were no longer used and they fell into disrepair, being demolished for safety reasons in 1971. The spire was spared demolition, and in 2004 a Heritage Lottery Grant was awarded to restore the spire and gates to their former glory. The cemetery is also an area for rare wild flowers and a haven for birds and wildlife.

A glowing report on Tripadvisor called this a 'typical cemetery', but I don't think you see a spire like this standing on it's own very often. Three sweet points on the leaderboard if you do visit it, and of course you can admire the beautiful coastline while you're here.

I love the great outdoors and have been a National Trust & English Heritage member for years. I also love going off the beaten track and finding places like Sharp's Folly or Rothley Castle which are hidden gems in Northumberland. My favourite recent hike was climbing Red Screes in the Lake District on a whim, not fully grasping how high 776m was. It was still an achievement to conquer a Wainwright walk and I hope to do more one day.
