The Archer's Stone can be found in the woodland near the River Dulnain.
I discovered it when planning a long walk in the area which started at the Slochd Viaduct and took in the Sluggan Bridge.

The stone remembers wee Iain Beag Macandra, also known as 'Little John MacAndew'. The story of his legendary talent as an archer has passed through folklore for many generations.
The position of the stone near Dalnahaitnach is close to the location where Macandra foiled the activities of the Macintosh cattle rustlers. The thieves were returning to Lochaber after stealing cattle from Clan Rose of Kilravock. Macandra intercepted them and killed their chief, the Laird of Achluachrach, with his bow and arrow.

Knowing that the Lochaber men would return seeking revenge, Macandra was prepared for their retaliation. Taking advantage of his short stature, on their return he pretended to be a young lad and offered to take them to the house of Iain Beag Macandra. With the assistance of his wife, the men were given food and drink while Macandra set himself up in a tree with his bow and arrows and took aim. Shouting that the man they sought had arrived, he killed each man as they came out of his house.

I have been unable to find who commissioned, made or positioned the Archer's Stone. If anyone can help me fill in the blanks I would be grateful.

It is a very pleasant walk to reach the memorial. From the parking area, head north on the track that leads down to the River and cross the bridge.
Follow the track as it passes through the pastures of Inverlaidnan. Go through the gate into the woodland and stay on the main track until there is a sharp right turn. Just before the turn you will find the memorial stone in the woodland on the left.

It is only 3km to reach the Archer's Stone, although you may choose to do the longer Inverlaidnan Loop and include the viaduct and bridge on a 12.5km route.

I have been a keen hill walker for many years and more recently enjoy trig bagging. When I'm not exploring Northumberland, County Durham and Yorkshire, I spend most of my holidays in bonny Scotland. Other than hills, I love investigating ruinous buildings and waterfalls. I have been a member of NT and EH for years, which also gives me access to Historic Environment Scotland places.
