Bruce Fountain And Tyndall-Bruce Statue

Fountain In Fife, Scotland

A fountain and statue in the village of Falkland, dedicated to Onesiphorus Tyndall-Bruce, who married Margaret Bruce, heiress to the Falkland Estate.

The Bruce Fountain sits in the middle of the road, at the centre of Falkland village.

After spending a day in Falkland, it became apparent that Onesiphorus Tyndall-Bruce and his wife Margaret were very important to the village. Margaret Bruce was a local heiress to the Falkland Estate, and when she married the Bristol born Barrister Onesiphorus Tyndall, the couple went on to make significant contributions to the local area, including the funding of the village fountain.

The Bruce Fountain was commissioned by the Tyndall-Bruces in 1853. They asked the Italian born architect, Alexander Roos to design the fountain, as the couple had already employed Roos on the design of the Temple of Decisions and the House of Falkland. It was decided that the fountain would take pride of place near the Mercat (Market) Cross in the heart of the village.

The fountain was unveiled in 1856, but sadly Onesiphorus died the year before and did not live to see the completed fountain.

Due to the limited water pressure to the fountain, it provided more of a gentle stream of water rather than the desired gush.

After much deliberation, it was decided to decorate the fountain with lions holding shields containing the Coat of Arms of both the Bruce's and the Falkland Royal Burgh.

The Bruce Fountain is a Category B Listed Building with Historic Environment Scotland.

The fountain sits in front of the Parish Church which was also funded by the Tyndall-Bruces.

In the churchyard is another tribute to the man himself. This time it comes in the form of the Tyndall-Bruce Statue.

The life size bronze statue of Onesiphorns Tyndall-Bruce was designed by John Steell and sits on top of a plinth that was built by David Bryce in 1864.

The funds to build the statue were raised by public subscription and completed in 1865.

The statue is a Category B Listed Building with Historic Environment Scotland.

For more details on the life of Tyndall-Bruce, or should you find yourself in need of a good stretch of the legs, please see the Tyndall-Bruce Monument and Temple of Decisions.

There is a good sized car park near the village centre.

I have been a keen hill walker for many years and more recently enjoy trig bagging. When I'm not exploring Northumberland, County Durham and Yorkshire, I spend most of my holidays in bonny Scotland. Other than hills, I love investigating ruinous buildings and waterfalls. I have been a member of NT and EH for years, which also gives me access to Historic Environment Scotland places.
