The Culloden Viaduct, which is also known as the Nairn Viaduct, Culloden Moor Viaduct and Clava Viaduct, is the longest railway viaduct in Scotland.
It carries a single track on the main railway line from Inverness to Aviemore and beyond, passing the Slochd Viaduct on the way. It is made from red sandstone rubble and concrete and has 29 arches, which tower around 40m above the River Nairn.

The 550m-long viaduct was built by Murdoch Paterson between 1893 and 1898. The round-topped arches have a 15m span, except the larger one above the river which is 30m.
This stretch of railway was built to cut short the journey south of Inverness, which originally went via Forres. It was one of the last major railway engineering works in Scotland.
Sadly, the Chief Engineer Murdoch Paterson died just three months before the viaduct and line was opened.

It is tricky to get a good photo of the viaduct, so below I share what I think is the best place for a quick snap.
This is another place that would benefit from the talents of the team's drone 'Red5'. Maybe we can convince Simon to bring his little pal up here for a photo shoot?
As you are here, the Clava Cairns are just round the corner and are well worth a visit.
The Culloden Viaduct is a Category A Listed Building with Historic Environment Scotland.

I have been a keen hill walker for many years and more recently enjoy trig bagging. When I'm not exploring Northumberland, County Durham and Yorkshire, I spend most of my holidays in bonny Scotland. Other than hills, I love investigating ruinous buildings and waterfalls. I have been a member of NT and EH for years, which also gives me access to Historic Environment Scotland places.
