Deel's Hill Standing Stone

Standing Stone In The Cheviots, Northumberland

A standing stone sitting on the remote Deel's Hill in the Cheviots, however it's most likely a gatepost or a cattle rubbing post.

Deel's Hill was one of the last hills I walked as part of the Cheviot 99 Challenge and as I was heading back down to the car at Blindburn this little standing stone appeared just off the track. It was quite straight edged for something that was natural so it must have been chiseled and then plonked here some time ago. Maybe a boundary stone of some sort?

I had a bit of a search online when back in the house and found this standing stone on Deel's Hill was likely an old gatepost or even just a cattle rubbing post, rather than some prehistoric standing stone.

These stones were a common feature in were commonly used in upland farming areas to mark boundaries or provide a place for livestock to give themselves a bit of a scratch.

The stone's location on Deel's Hill suggests it was part of the agricultural landscape, possibly associated with the nearby settlement of Blindburn. Still a cool little find.

Thanks for checking out this place on the Fabulous North! I do enjoy a wander out in to the countryside trying to find hidden gems that not many people know about. You can't beat a rogue pele tower up a remote hill, a mysterious stone circle or a stunning waterfall secluded in a forest.
