Lochnagar Trig Point

This is the Lochnagar trig point (1155m) near Ballater.

From the car park, take the track southwest, passing the toilets on the right. Take the next right heading northwest.

Continue on the track as it cuts through woodland.

The track starts to get steeper and it climbs west. At the cairn, take the path to the left. Continue on the path passing the Fox Cairn Well on the left.

Keep an eye out for a path on the left, it is quite steep, but the path has been well managed and stone steps have been installed.

After a final push you will reach the plateau and the gradient eases.

The views over Lochnagar (the loch) to the Lochnagar ridges and buttresses are superb.

The path follows around the top of the cliffs, so great care is needed in poor visability.

The ridges and buttresses are a playground for experienced climbers, so you may see some hanging around on their ropes, clinging to the rock.

Once you reach the large cairn your goal is in sight.

After a short scramble you have reached the Lochnagar trig point and toposcope.

The views of the surrounding mountains are amazing.

It is 9km with 840m of ascent to the Lochnagar trig point.
