Low Wood Edge Lime Kiln
Lime Kiln In Beetham, Cumbria
Flare kiln close to Beetham village in an AONB

On our first day in the Cumbrian countryside, before heading to Lancashire, we visited the village of Beetham. As well as popping into the fab Heron Corn Mill, we had a wander to the small and perfectly formed Low Wood Edge Lime Kiln.
There is parking right outside the kiln, or you can do as we did and stay parked at Heron Mill and enjoy a short walk up to it through the countryside.
We do love a lime kiln at Fabulous North, and have 23 on the site at the minute, so we can be fairly sure about how they worked and what the lime was used for! The process was very sustainable, as the limestone and charcoal needed in the process of making lime was all sourced locally.

The Wood Edge kiln was a flare kiln type, used when needed as opposed to a draw kiln which was in continuous use. Most of the kilns in the AONB of Arnside & Silverdale were the flare kiln type.
In the area of Beetham it's no surprise that the lime produced was used in local farming, helping soil that was low in nutrients to become more fertile for growing crops.
I can't find the exact number of kilns that were built in Cumbria, but it's possibly in a similar ballpark to the 400 in Northumberland. Good luck to anyone who finds them all! If you do, we will reward you with a fruity malt and a sweet sherry at the end of your quest.

I love the great outdoors and have been a National Trust & English Heritage member for years. I also love going off the beaten track and finding places like Sharp's Folly or Rothley Castle which are hidden gems in Northumberland. My favourite recent hike was climbing Red Screes in the Lake District on a whim, not fully grasping how high 776m was. It was still an achievement to conquer a Wainwright walk and I hope to do more one day.
