If you are passing through the pretty village of Nethy Bridge, or as the locals call it 'Nethy', take the time to stop at the local shop and bridge, and visit this lovely little fountain, although it no longer provides water.
It was commissioned by Lord and Lady Stamford and Warrington when they gave up their lease on the nearby Abernethy Deer Shooting Forest in the late 19th century. They were responsible for building the Abernethy Forest Lodge, which is now used as offices by RSPB staff.

The drinking fountain is inscribed with the words 'Drink Hearty' and once provided metal cups which are now long gone. There is a further semi-circular inscription on this lower section of the fountain; however, the words are barely legible. From what I could decipher, I reckon it refers to the fountain being donated by the Stamfords.
The fountain was originally nearer the roadside, but was relocated after being damaged when hit by a truck.

The larger area was historically owned by the Grants, who leased part of it to the Stamfords. The Naylors purchased the land from the Grants and went on to sell it to the RSPB. The RSPB purchased Loch Garten in 1975 and the land at Lower Dell in 1988.
The Abernethy Forest National Nature Reserve includes Abernethy Two Lochs and Loch Garten Nature Reserve which are amazing places to visit.
Once you have finished your visit, keep heading north on the road for 1.5km and you can visit the fabulous Castle Roy and Abernethy Old Kirk.

I have been a keen hill walker for many years and more recently enjoy trig bagging. When I'm not exploring Northumberland, County Durham and Yorkshire, I spend most of my holidays in bonny Scotland. Other than hills, I love investigating ruinous buildings and waterfalls. I have been a member of NT and EH for years, which also gives me access to Historic Environment Scotland places.
