You don't need to go very far in Dumfriesto be reminded of one of its most famous residents. Although born near Ayr, the Scottish poet Robert Burns spent his later life here in Dumfries.
This impressive marble sculpture of 'Rabbie' was unveiled on the 6th April 1882 to celebrate the life and career of this charismatic bard.

You may be surprised to know that Robert Burns died at the tender young age of 37. This is remarkable considering the volume of his work and the impact that he has had on Scotland and beyond. Probably his most famous work was the song 'Auld Lang Syne', which he wrote in 1788 and is sung at Hogmanay (New Year) world over.
We are also lucky enough to celebrate his birthday every year on Burns Night. Who doesn't enjoy haggis and a wee dram of whisky on the 25th January?

The statue was commissioned by Dumfries Council and designed by the artist and sculptor, Amelia Robertson Hill. The sculpture of Burns was then carved from Carrara marble in Italy.
The dog depicted at Burns' feet was his beloved border collie named Luath. He wrote of Luath in the poem 'The Twa Dogs'. It tells of the working collie Luath and a wealthy landowner's dog, Caesar, who shared a strong friendship despite their difference in social class.
It sits on a grey ashlar pedestal which contains four marble inscribed panels. One of the panels is inscribed with details of the statue and date of its unveiling, while the other three contain the words of Burns himself.
It stands in its pride of place at the top of the High Street with the striking Gothic-style red sandstone Greyfriars Church behind.

The statue underwent some restoration work in 2005.
I will look closer at the life of Robert Burns at the Robert Burns House and the Burns Mausoleum.

I have been a keen hill walker for many years and more recently enjoy trig bagging. When I'm not exploring Northumberland, County Durham and Yorkshire, I spend most of my holidays in bonny Scotland. Other than hills, I love investigating ruinous buildings and waterfalls. I have been a member of NT and EH for years, which also gives me access to Historic Environment Scotland places.
