Robert The Bruce Statue Stirling Castle
Statue In Stirling, Scotland
A statue of Robert the Bruce that sits in front of Stirling Castle with views of the Wallace Monument and Ochil Hills.

One of the most famous characters in Scottish history is King Robert I of Scotland. There are a few statues of Robert the Bruce, but I doubt you will find one that commands such an incredible position as this one on the esplanade of Stirling Castle.
The life of Robert the Bruce is a busy one and is monumental in Scottish history, but probably the singularly most important was his victories in the First War of Scottish Independence, of which the Battle of Bannockburn was one.

The statue faces south east towards the site of the Battle of Bannockburn. This is where Bruce succeeded in defeating the English, seeing off Edward II and retaking Stirling Castle.
The statue of Bruce was created in 1876, and was designed by the illustrator George Cruikshank, and made by sculptor Andrew Currie.
The sculpture is made of stone and depicts Robert the Bruce adorned with chain mail, with his hand placed on his sword handle, behind him his shield and axe. The plinth is also decorated with a shield with a Lion Rampant of Scotland.

The statue is so iconic that as from 2020, it began being featuring on the Clydesdale Bank £20 note.

The statue is in good company, as the Boer War Memorial is also only meters away from the front door of Stirling Castle, both commanding brilliant views over the Ochil Hills and the Wallace Monument.

The Robert the Bruce Statue at Stirling Castle Esplanade is a Category C Listed Building with Historic Environment Scotland.

I have been a keen hill walker for many years and more recently enjoy trig bagging. When I'm not exploring Northumberland, County Durham and Yorkshire, I spend most of my holidays in bonny Scotland. Other than hills, I love investigating ruinous buildings and waterfalls. I have been a member of NT and EH for years, which also gives me access to Historic Environment Scotland places.
