RSPB Wood of Cree

Landscape In Newton Stewart, Scotland

An RSPB Nature Reserve in Dumfries and Galloway, comprising Ancient Woodland, Rivers, Moorland, Grassland and Scrub habitats.

The Wood of Cree, managed by the RSPB, is an incredible mosaic of habitats including woodland, wood pasture, open moorland, wet floodplain woodland, fen, grassland and scrub in Dumfries and Galloway. This wide range of habitats supports an equally diverse range of plant, animal and bird life, making it an incredibly important ecosystem.

At the core of the Wood of Cree lies a vast expanse of ancient woodland, defined in Scotland as an area of woodland which has existed continuously since 1750, which is dominated by oak trees, the woodland provides a haven for a diverse array of flora and fauna. As spring unfolds, a carpet of bluebells blankets the forest floor, creating a spectacle of colour for a few weeks.

The reserve is renowned for its rich biodiversity, supporting a wide range of species. Among the avian inhabitants are Redstarts, Pied Flycatchers, and Wood Warblers, which all arrive from Africa in May and make the reserve their home for the summer. You can spot up to eight types of bat in the woods, including the rare and secretive Leisler's Bat.

The woodland also provides a vital habitat for a variety of mammals, including red deer, roe deer, and badgers. The presence of these creatures, along with the intricate web of life they support, underscores the ecological significance of the Wood of Cree.

The reserve's proximity to the River Cree adds another dimension to its natural beauty. The river provides a vital habitat for a diverse range of aquatic life, including salmon, trout, and otters. There is a viewing platform you can use which, if you are very lucky, will give you a view of these very elusive mammals. The reserve's management practices are carefully designed to protect and enhance the river's ecosystem, ensuring the continued health and vitality of its aquatic inhabitants.

The Wood of Cree offers a variety of trails and paths, each providing a unique perspective on the reserve's natural beauty. The Woodland Trail, a gentle one-mile loop, winds through the heart of the ancient woodland, offering glimpses of diverse wildlife and stunning scenery. The Scrubland Trail, a more challenging route, provides panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and offers opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife spotting.

The RSPB plays a crucial role in safeguarding the Wood of Cree's natural heritage. Through a combination of active management practices and public engagement initiatives, the organisation strives to protect and enhance the reserve's biodiversity. These efforts include controlling invasive species, restoring degraded habitats, and educating visitors about the importance of conservation.
