Seaham Lime Kilns

Lime Kiln In Seaham, County Durham

Lime kilns located at Seaham harbour, restored in 2005.

Seaham lime kilns are situated at Seaham Harbour and much like Fulwell Lime Kilns, they are slightly obscured by cars parked in front of them! However, you can still appreciate their great size and you can have a peek inside through the railings.

There were originally 8 kilns here, used from the 1820s onwards. They were in prime position on the coast at Seaham as there was an abundance of lime in the cliffs. The lime that was mined here was mixed with water to make slaked lime, which created mortar and putty. The lime was also used by farmers to increase the fertility of their soil, particularly for cabbage and cauliflower crops.

Three of the kilns were demolished in the 1960s, however five still remain. From the 1960s onwards, the kilns were left to ruin, however, plans to revamp the harbour began in 1994 and the kilns were restored to their former glory in 2005.

The restoration work was part of a two phase project at the harbour which also included restoring the former Lifeboat House, creating shops and cafes, and creating viewing areas. There is now a viewing area on top of the lime kilns which you can access via a metal staircase behind the kilns. There are lovely views out to sea from here.

I love the great outdoors and have been a National Trust & English Heritage member for years. I also love going off the beaten track and finding places like Sharp's Folly or Rothley Castle which are hidden gems in Northumberland. My favourite recent hike was climbing Red Screes in the Lake District on a whim, not fully grasping how high 776m was. It was still an achievement to conquer a Wainwright walk and I hope to do more one day.
