Silvas Capitalis
Art In Kielder, Northumberland
Giant wooden head looking out over Kielder Reservoir.
Kielder Reservoir has an abundance of fantastic things to do, so we recently spent a few days there to see some of the highlights. We've previously spent some time on the south shore, but thought it was time to explore the north shore and visit some of the more tricky to get to sculptures. First on our list was Silvas Capitalis, a bit of an icon of Kielder; a giant, somewhat eerie wooden head situated 5km from Kielder Castle along the Lakeside Way walk. The walk is pretty flat and not too tricky, but it's worth mentioning that there are no facilities at all along the north shore - no loos or cafe stops after Kielder until Hawkhope car park at the other end of the reservoir. That's the health and safety bit done.
The walk along the north shore is beautiful and while you're treated to stunning views over Bakethin Reservoir, it means it doesn't feel like a 10km walk. There are plenty of birds to spot too including Goldcrest, Siskin, Spotted Flycatcher and if you're lucky you might spot the Osprey out hunting in the spring months. The artwork is signposted as you approach it and you can catch a glimpse of it as you head into the woodland. When we got up close I thought it was pretty eerie, and it's hard to gauge how big the head is in pictures, but it's huge. At one point you could step inside the mouth and head up some steps to look out from the eyes, but unfortunately storm Arwen in 2021 did some serious damage to the sculpture and the mouth is now blocked off. You can see where some trees fell on the back of the head and there is a big gaping hole in the woodwork.
The artwork was created in 2009 by a team called SIMPARCH, a team of artists from New Mexico in the United States. Their name is a combination of 'simple' and 'architecture' and they create site specific artworks made from recycled or salvaged materials. Silvas Capitalis was created using layers of Larch wood, pegged and glued together, using wood from the forest. The idea being, that when the artwork fully decays, it can be allowed to rot away and leave nothing behind. The name Silvas Capitalis comes from Latin, meaning 'forest head' and the head looks over to the south shore keeping an eye on things.
It's a great piece of art that is part of a collection of artworks along the lakeside including Wave Chamber, Freya's Cabin and a number of other fantastic pieces that we'll get around to writing up one day. During our visit, we continued our walk along the reservoir and reached the Janus Chairs (or should I say chair - two had been removed) and if we had been feeling extra fit, Robin's Hut was a further 3.5km from there. Overall, that would have been a 22km walk though and beyond our capabilities that day. The artworks were certainly not created to visit in one go, but that's just an excuse for us to go back again to this beautiful area.

I love the great outdoors and have been a National Trust & English Heritage member for years. I also love going off the beaten track and finding places like Sharp's Folly or Rothley Castle which are hidden gems in Northumberland. My favourite recent hike was climbing Red Screes in the Lake District on a whim, not fully grasping how high 776m was. It was still an achievement to conquer a Wainwright walk and I hope to do more one day.
