The Eye
Art In Newton Stewart, Scotland
Impressive 10m high sculpture on the bank of Black Loch.
The Eye is an impressive cone sculpture made with quarry tiles on the edge of the stunning Black Loch in Galloway Forest Park.
It was created in 1999 by artist Colin Rose, whose name might ring a bell to you, as he also created Rolling Moon in Gateshead Riverside Park and Swirl also in Gateshead. He has an extensive CV though and it's likely you'll have seen many of his works in the North East.
The area around Black Loch is stunning and there was no one else there when we visited in July 2024. The Eye is an easy wander from the Black Loch car park, and you'll spot it immediately. Despite it's unnatural shape, it blends into the landscape very well. The sculpture is 10 metres high and at eye height, there is a hole cut through the cone allowing you to see over to the other side of the loch, which is the 'eye of the needle'.
A fab little find off the beaten track and if you fancy extending your visit Quorum - The Stone Faces isn't too far away either. A beautiful part of South West Scotland.

I love the great outdoors and have been a National Trust & English Heritage member for years. I also love going off the beaten track and finding places like Sharp's Folly or Rothley Castle which are hidden gems in Northumberland. My favourite recent hike was climbing Red Screes in the Lake District on a whim, not fully grasping how high 776m was. It was still an achievement to conquer a Wainwright walk and I hope to do more one day.
