The Loovre

Building In Berwick Upon Tweed, Northumberland

Once a public loo, now a tiny holiday home in the heart of Berwick.

The Loovre is a Grade II listed building, tucked away in a corner of Berwick Upon Tweed with views of the fascinating Elizabethan Walls. It's name hints at what it was in a former life, however, it was once adorned with the more obvious title of Bankhill Toilet.

The Loovre was built in 1899 and was unusual in that it was a public toilet for ladies. Public toilets were introduced from the mid 1800s, but the vast majority were solely for men as it was felt that ladies were far too modest to use a public convenience.

The building caught the eye of an ice cream entrepreneur, who saw in the Loovre a quirky charm perfect for his unique business. And so, the Northern Edge Coffee Bar & Ice-Cream Palace was born. Though the ice cream parlour chapter has closed, the Loovre's story continues. Now, it offers a unique holiday home, with a private courtyard to the rear, with clever storage solutions for the small space. You may have seen The Loovre on the Channel 4 programme George Clarke's Amazing Spaces, when it was featured in January 2022.

Although we would love to stay sometime, we haven't booked up yet, but if anyone has any photos of the interior, we would love to see them!

If you have plans to stay in Berwick any time soon, there is plenty to see including parks, castles and bridges. You can find lots more on the website as usual: Berwick Upon Tweed

I love the great outdoors and have been a National Trust & English Heritage member for years. I also love going off the beaten track and finding places like Sharp's Folly or Rothley Castle which are hidden gems in Northumberland. My favourite recent hike was climbing Red Screes in the Lake District on a whim, not fully grasping how high 776m was. It was still an achievement to conquer a Wainwright walk and I hope to do more one day.
