Armstrong Bridge Jesmond Dene, Newcastle

Armstrong Bridge, completed in 1878, spans the wooded Ouseburn Valley above Jesmond Dene Park and is named after one of Newcastle's most famous sons. Sir William George Armstrong (or Lord Armstrong as he is better known) had the idea for the bridge, then financed and built it, to link Jesmond with Heaton.

During the mid-19th century Newcastle was growing into a global powerhouse and Lord Armstrong was at the centre of that through his work in ship building, manufacturing, armaments and coal mining. He also had an interest in civic enrichment and improving the lives of people. This led, during the 1860s, to the design and creation of Jesmond Dene Park.

Travelers who wanted to get from Jesmond to Heaton would have to negotiate Benton Bank, a steep drop into and ascent out of the Ouseburn Valley, which caused a bottleneck for traffic and therefore commerce. Recognising this as an opportunity Armstrong offered to gift a new bridge to the city. Built over 2 years from 1876 to 1878 Armstrong Bridge was designed and fabricated by the Sir W.G. Armstrong & Co. at their Elswick Works, with the stone work contracted to Messrs. W.E. & F. Jackson.

The bridge was officially opened on April 30th 1878 and was 168m long, 7.8m wide and between 9 and 20m in height, and its construction is of wrought iron lattice girders with 7 columns around 22m apart. Mining subsidence was a huge issue around Newcastle and Armstrong's engineers came up with a number of innovative solutions to address this. The lattice girders rest on rocker and expansion bearings meaning they aren't fixed rigidly to the piers, allowing the bridge to flex and expand without problems. The bridge deck is also constructed in sections which reduces the impacts should there be movement under the piers of one section.

The relatively lightweight construction helps the bridge to blend into the woodland area and the sandstone abutments mirror the surrounding rock outcrops found within Jesmond Dene. While originally a vehicular and pedestrian bridge, increasing vehicle loads meant that in 1920 restrictions had to be put in place before traffic was finally banned in the 1960s following the construction of a new, modern road through the valley.

The bridge was almost demolished in the late 1970s due to structural decay, but luckily in 1983 funds were found to begin some initial repair works. In 1993-94 the bridge had a major structural overhaul which saw the original piers replaced with replicas, girders strengthened and the deck renewed. The work was carried out by Ove Arup and Partners and ensured the bridge's survival and protect its Grade II listed status.

Even in the 21st century, Armstrong Bridge is a well-used pedestrian route for visitors to Jesmond Dene and Armstrong Park, as well as hosting regular food markets on the first and third Saturday of each month. Just one of many amazing gifts to the region from Lord Armstrong and his family.
