Drumcoltran Tower can be found near Kirkgunzeon, halfway between Dumfries and Dalbeattie.
This L-shaped four-storey tower house with rounded corners was built around 1570 by one of the branches of the Maxwell family. The tower house may have originally been a rectangular building, with the protruding extension containing the spiral staircase being added later in the 1500s.
The history on this little gem is surprisingly sparse.

Tower Houses always get me excited, but this one was rather special inside. The restoration work is brilliant and you can see how its occupants would have lived.
Access to the castle is via the signposted path at the front, not through the farmyard.

In 1550, the lands of Kirkgunzeon passed from the Herries family to the Maxwells, when the second son of Lord Robert Maxwell, John, married Agnes Herries of Terregles. It may have been them that built Drumcoltran Tower. Another suggestion is that it could have been their son, Edward Maxwell, who became the commendator of Dundrennan.
Before we head inside, look up. Above the entrance is a stone panel, which contained a heraldic symbol and the words which translate to 'Keep hidden what is secret, speak little, be truthful, avoid wine, remember death, be merciful, be pitiful'.

On entering the tower house, the ground level contains the vaulted cellar, which is split into two parts: one side is the kitchen, and the other is used for storage.

From the ground floor, time to take a walk up the spiral staircase to the first floor.

Here the inside of the castle really opens up, and you can see all the different floors of the castle, including the windows, fireplaces and latrine.
This floor would have contained the laird's hall, which provided a large living area for the family and a place for the laird to conduct business. Although originally one room, it was divided into two sometime in the 18th century, and a second fireplace was added.

From here, let's head up the staircase to the next level.

From what was once a doorway into the second floor, it now provides a great view down into the vast space. This floor contained two chambers (bedrooms) and a latrine. You can see the fireplaces, windows, latrine and the notches where the floor joists would have once sat.
There is evidence that many of the building's windows were enlarged sometime during the 17th century.

Time to head up yet again, this time to the third floor or attic.
At this level there appears to be a fireplace and small windows. The notches for the joists show that it would have had a floor, maybe another chamber.

Just around the corner and up a few steps is a cosy little watch chamber. Personally, it's my favourite room in the tower house.

Saving the best until last, this room has easy access to the wall walk. The wall walk provides views for miles around and was once for security purposes, but now it's for pure pleasure.

I made it up there just in time to catch the sun setting on the surrounding countryside and farmyard.

Although Drumcoltran Tower passed to the Irvings in 1668, it was back with the Maxwells by the 18th century, when the surrounding farm buildings were constructed and alterations were made to the tower's interior.
The tower provided accommodation to servants on the farm until it was finally abandoned in the 1800s.

Drumcoltran Tower is now a designated Scheduled Monument with Historic Environment Scotland.

I have been a keen hill walker for many years and more recently enjoy trig bagging. When I'm not exploring Northumberland, County Durham and Yorkshire, I spend most of my holidays in bonny Scotland. Other than hills, I love investigating ruinous buildings and waterfalls. I have been a member of NT and EH for years, which also gives me access to Historic Environment Scotland places.
