Sinkside Hill Hillfort
Hillfort In The Cheviots, Northumberland
An iron age hillfort on top of Sinkside Hill in the north west of the Cheviots.
If you're into climbing hills or even better are doing the Cheviot 99 Challenge, then Sinkside Hill will be on your to do list. When summiting hills it's always fab to find a little treasure at the top such as a trig point or even just a cairn. Something to reward your efforts and let you know you have made it to the peak.
But even better when there is a magnificent hillfort at the top and there are quite a few hillforts in Northumberland to be found.
On top of Sinkside Hill is a fabulous example of an iron age hillfort.
The iron age started around 800 BC and these hillforts would be home to hundreds of people. High ground was obviously chosen to make it easier to defend against attacks from other tribes.
The only problem with hillforts nowadays is that they are slowly being consumed by the vegetation, so the only way to get a good view is if some fool will lug their drone up on top of hills. By the way, you're welcome! :)
You can see some inner enclosures which were probably used for sheep.
Then while up on the nearby Loft Hill, we took a few more pictures from a distance to give you a better perspective.
If you fancy visiting this one yourself, then leave your car at the Hethpool car park, head down the College Valley and then follow the fingerpost to Trowupburn. Take the right fork which will then head up the side of Sinkside Hill and then make your way to the top.
Follow this route or open up OS Maps. Just under 4km to get there and 219m of climbing. Enjoy!

Thanks for checking out this place on the Fabulous North! I do enjoy a wander out in to the countryside trying to find hidden gems that not many people know about. You can't beat a rogue pele tower up a remote hill, a mysterious stone circle or a stunning waterfall secluded in a forest.
