St Wilfrid's Gateway
Building In Hexham, Northumberland
The remains of a gatehouse that lead to an Augustinian Priory Church.
The roots of St Wilfrid's Gateway trace back to the 7th century when the renowned Anglo-Saxon bishop, St Wilfrid, established a monastery on the banks of the River Tyne. This monastic community quickly grew in significance, becoming a center of learning, spirituality, and artistic expression. The original church, built in 674, served as the heart of this burgeoning religious establishment.
In 678, the monastery was elevated to the status of a cathedral, solidifying its position as a powerful ecclesiastical institution. However, the Vikings' relentless raids in the 9th century brought devastation to the region, including the destruction of the cathedral in 821.
Centuries later, in 1113, the site was revitalised when it was re-founded as a priory for Augustinian canons. This marked a new chapter in the history of Hexham, with the priory becoming a focal point of religious and cultural life in the area.
It was during this period of renewed monastic activity that St Wilfrid's Gateway was constructed, around 1160. This imposing structure served as the principal entrance to the priory complex, its sturdy stonework and defensive features reflecting the turbulent times in which it was built. It had an upper storey which was used as the residence of the Prior of the cathedral. Beside it stood an Almonry (a place where alms were distributed), where the Hexham Canons provided hospitality and took care of the poor and visiting pilgrims.
St Wilfrid's Gateway is a fine example of Norman architecture, characterised by its robust construction and distinctive decorative elements. The gateway's design incorporates features such as round arches, deeply recessed doorways, and intricate stonework, all hallmarks of the Norman style.
