Bamburgh Pant
Fountain In Bamburgh, Northumberland
A 19th Century drinking fountain and trough on The Grove that would have provided drinking water to the village.

This pant situated on the corner of The Grove in Bamburgh is not far from St Aidan's Church and is a reminder of the importance of clean running water to the people of Bamburgh in Victorian times. The pant was installed by the Lord Crewe Trustees, the charitable body that managed the Bamburgh Castle estate during the 18th and 19th centuries. The pant would have been installed here for the public to use when cholera outbreaks were common, some time at the beginning of the 1800s. Like all things Victorian, it wasn't just made with function in mind, it was also created to look aesthetically pleasing and has a gothick style to it and a lion head waterspout.

This pant at Bamburgh looks a bit lonely but if water fountains are your thing, there are a plethora of pants in Alnwick of varying sizes and decoration. We have a full list of pants here if your interest has been piqued: Fountains
The word 'pant' is believed to be derived from 'pond' or the Old French word pantiere, referring to a reservoir or a public water pipe and is nothing to do with breathing quickly or trousers.
Bamburgh is up there as one of our favourite places in the Fabulous North and the village is full of wonderful history. A visit to the Bamburgh Castle is a must and we found the Grace Darling Museum fascinating when we visited last year. It is also worth a visit to St Aidan's Church to see the Grace Darling Monument and the place where the local heroine is buried.

I love the great outdoors and have been a National Trust & English Heritage member for years. I also love going off the beaten track and finding places like Sharp's Folly or Rothley Castle which are hidden gems in Northumberland. My favourite recent hike was climbing Red Screes in the Lake District on a whim, not fully grasping how high 776m was. It was still an achievement to conquer a Wainwright walk and I hope to do more one day.
