Stonehaugh has recently become one of my favourite places to visit, as there is so much to see here with some beautiful walks and scenery and it's unlikely you'll see another soul on your trip. My kind of place!

Stonehaugh sits in the stunning Northumberland National Park, and was built in 1957 to house Forestry Commision workers. It is renowned for it's dark skies as there is very little light pollution in this area and there is a Star Dome close to the parking area where you can sit and appreciate the stars in peace and quiet. You'll also find the Stonehaugh Totem Poles close to the car park and the The Long Drop a bit further out into the wilds.

Stonehaugh Waterfall sits on the Middle Burn which feeds into the wider Wark Burn. It's a spectacular little waterfall and looks quite a picture when you get up close to it. It's surrounded by mossy rocks and trees and is very atmospheric, particularly after a rainfall when the peat-stained water runs a deep amber colour. It's a bit steep as you head down to the waterfall, so walking boots are recommended and take care on the climb down.

If you fancy a longer walk, you can head into Wark Forest from the parking area. It is very well signposted and you'll be treated to some of the best woodland walks in Northumberland in my opinion. Wark Forest is in the southern part of Kielder Forest and on our last visit in October 2025 we were lucky enough to spot Red Squirrels scurrying around the tops of the trees. There is plenty of birdlife here for twitchers like us too - we've seen Buzzards, Green Woodpecker and Spotted Flycactchers at different times of the year. This is a beautiful, unspoilt place and a fab day out.

I love the great outdoors and have been a National Trust & English Heritage member for years. I also love going off the beaten track and finding places like Sharp's Folly or Rothley Castle which are hidden gems in Northumberland. My favourite recent hike was climbing Red Screes in the Lake District on a whim, not fully grasping how high 776m was. It was still an achievement to conquer a Wainwright walk and I hope to do more one day.
